EUROPEAN CAR magazine features the BMW DINAN M5 S2 sedan......

Hi Guys,
I have the Feb. 2004 volume 35 NO.2 magazine, which has the described car article. Here it is. Thought you would want to read it. INTERESTING!!!!

DINAN S2 M5
As good as a sport sedan can get!

By Les Bidrawn

Its been two months since I drove I drove the M5. Its memory has been indelibly etched on my mind. You cannot forget a car so fundamentally good.
The S2 is a product of Steve Dinan's meticulous approach to automotive tuning. Every gear, length of tube, screw, or bit of software has been tried, tested, and tortured to the point of disintegration. Time consuming? You bet. Expensive? Sort of. But considering Dinan is the only North American tuner recognized by BMW with fully warranted products, a Dinan BMW is a bargain.
Although a stock M5 is by no means an underachiever, the S2 manages to leave it wanting. Shod with what are perhaps the broadest shoulders of all sports sedans, Dinan coaxed significantly more performance from the M5 with a program largely based upon bolt-on components. The engine has been massaged to improve breathing, or more accurately, give the M5 a pair of God-like lungs. The airbox was augmented with Dinan’s cold air intake system, featuring dual intake tubes wrought from carbon fiber. The filters are relocated outside the engine compartment to ensure the motor gets plenty of cold, dense air as well as providing insulation from engine compartment heat. The stock plastic air flow meters have been replaced with larger diameter machined units, increasing air flow by some 25%. The eight throttle bodies’ internal diameters have been increased for a substantial boost in air flow. The stock velocity stacks have been replaced by shorter, larger diameter aluminum units that have been tuned to optimize their performance at a higher rpm. Lastly, a CNC-machined plenum cover spacer increases plenum volume by 20%, and the camshaft timing was reprogrammed to take advantage of the intakes’ increased capacities.
On the exhaust side lies perhaps the most gorgeous set of headers to ever grace a BMW. The intricate curves and bends leave these stainless-steel, ceramic-coated 4-2-1 anti-reversion headers with an organic appearance, like the guts of some metal beast. Matt Taylor, a 20-year employee with Dinan, artfully designed these units, which replace the restrictive stock exhaust manifolds. The headers alone netted a gain of some 28 hp. The S2 M5 exhales through Dinan’s stainless-steel free flow exhaust, providing a roaring tone and a significant weight savings over the stock parts.
Dinan programmers made significant revisions to the M5 ECU, increasing its parameters to keep up with the engine’s newfound capabilities. In addition to timing, VANOS timing, and fuel maps, the Dinan ECU also increases the rev limit to 7300 rpm and removes the top-speed governor. And to make certain the S2 M5 continues to perform even under huge loads; the system that monitors the intake air temperature for the ECU was modified to reduce the effects of heat soaking. The Dinan system provides a more accurate computer signal, ensuring timing is not reduced based upon a higher than actual temperature reading. The summation of Dinan’s work brings the stock output of 394- to 470 bhp, with torque increased from 368- to 419 lb-ft. And all that power is delivered with a curve nearly identical to BMW’s, only Dinan is much higher on the graph.
The S2 M5 incorporates several driveline mods designed to improve efficiency by reducing rotational weight to take full advantage of existing torque. The factory’s dual-mass flywheel has been lightened by 7 lb, resulting in a 40% reduction in rotational mass. To ensure the engine remains stable during idle and clutch engagement, the idle speed has been increased to 900 rpm. The stock 3.15 final drive gearing has been shortened to a 3.45, increasing the torque delivered to the ground by nearly 10%. It’s a great method to extract even more response from the hugely capable motor. Whereas a stock M5 launches with neck-snapping bravado, the S2 M5 feels as though you were shot from a canon. The torque is so powerful; you actually strain to keep your hand on the shifter. And with six forward selections, that’s a sizable but hugely rewarding chore. The S2 goes through the gears with frightening brevity, each shift punctuated by the rev limiter. It is amazing a V8 can rev up so fast.
Dinan had just finished development of a new suspension comprised of Dinan’s proprietary performance springs, adjustable rear anti-roll bar, front fixed camber plates and JRZ dampers. The JRZ units feature both compression and rebound adjustments and have been specifically designed/tuned to Dinan specifications.
“I try to tell people this suspension is markedly firmer than the factory’s and yet more comfortable,” said Steve Dinan. “They don’t get it. They can’t understand how a suspension can be both. They’ve got to experience it for themselves before realizing you don’t always need to compromise for greater performance.”
I know JRZ primarily through its involvement in racing. I also know there is a lot of engineering behind the technology and it is not inexpensive. Without question, the S2 M5 was the most remarkable handling mid-size sport sedan this writer had ever driven. The S2 cuts through both tight corners and long, high-speed sweepers with preternatural smoothness. It’s hard to believe the car weighs some 2 tons because it behaves with all the dexterity of a smaller, lighter vehicle. Although the steering was a tad heavy (a result of wider tires), the S2 responds like the world’s biggest formula car- Turn-in is crisp and immediate and, depending upon how brave you are, the BMW will wag its tail with throttle-induced oversteer. Getting to that point, however, is not easy, as the car’s overall grip is formidable. Although Dinan cars are expected to behave in such a manner, the S2’s street civility is surprising. It still feels every bit the luxury cruiser BMW designed it to be. Just poking around town revealed a perfectly compliant ride, neither too stiff nor too soft. The S2 M5 rides on Dinan’s lightweight one-piece forges wheels: 9X18 in front and 9.5X18 in the rear. Weighting a paltry 17 lb ( a bit more out back), these wheels are quite possibly the lightest, strongest road wheels available. Michelin Pilot Sports measure 275/35ZR18 and 285/35ZR18, respectively, a 30/10 mm increase in stock width.
Yesterday my favorite car was Dinan’s S2-M5. Today, it’s still the S2. I have a feeling it will be the same tomorrow. You don’t forget a car this good.

Recent Small Japanese cars

Many of the small cars you spot haring around Japanese cities are K-cars, identified by their yellow licence plates and staggeringly small those are really very comfortable and suitable for all.

Small cars with environmental technology become moving cells, parts of the cit

Including its supporting industries and ranging from engine manufacture to creating the interfaces between cars and people, the auto industry is involved in a very broad swathe of manufacturing, and it is a direct player in the effort to reduce carbon emissions. Japan is one of the world's top manufacturers in the industry, with eight different car makers and a home market where the car has become a familiar tool and an integral part of day-to-day life. This exhibition has been created to give a clear and comprehensible view of the characteristics and circumstances behind Japanese cars today. Although the history of cars in Japan began with an attempt to emulate the West's automotive technology and culture, the context of Japanese lifestyles and Japan's particular route to industrial development has given Japan's cars their own unique characteristics and individuality. This exhibition presents these characteristics, consolidating them into three specific perspectives.
1: Size
The most straightforward way to reduce the impact of cars on the environment is to make smaller cars. Simplicity is the starting point for Japanese aesthetics, and Japan has a distinct category of mini-vehicles—also known as light cars, kei cars, or micro-cars. Mini-vehicles need to fit within a length restriction of 3.40 m, width of 1.48 m and height of 2.00 m, and have an engine no larger than 660 cc. These cars are very small, so instead of designs that convey status or aerodynamic shapes that give an impression of speed, compliance with these regulations has resulted in cars with clear design concepts based on efficiency as a means of transportation. Tiny cars can be found around the world, but those in Japan are distinctive for being tightly packed with sophistication and advanced performance. Even with cars that do not meet the mini-vehicle parameters, Japan has excelled in smallness, creating the four-seater premium car with one of the world's smallest turning circles, and the two-seater sports car with the world's largest production record. Japan has also produced agile 4x4 vehicles that use lightness and compactness instead of power to cope with off-road conditions. The exhibition demonstrates the wisdom behind this smallness that is taken to extremes in Japan cars.
2: Environment
A second characteristic of Japan cars is that they have led the world in producing mature technology for the shift to alternative energies. Three different approaches are presented here—electricity, hydrogen-powered fuel cell, and hybrid systems that use either gasoline or electricity according to requirements. These technologies have each been developed to the stage of practical application in Japan cars, and are already mass-prodeced. The exhibition presents a small electric car that can run for 160 km after charging overnight simply by plugging into a domestic power supply, a hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicle that is now available on lease for use in combination with hydrogen refuelling stations that utilize solar energy. Hybrid cars are already in practical use worldwide. The successful achievement of these environmental technologies surely results from Japan's background, including the experience of horrific air and water pollution in the wake of rapid economic growth, and the country's lack of oil reserves, meaning that it suffers whenever oil prices are high.

An introduction to Old classic Cars.

Probably the most discussed question raised by people with a new found interest in older cars, is 'What is a Classic Car?'. Finding an answer to this question ranks with establishing the meaning of life (well almost), as there can be no other debate likely to raise the hackles of one group of enthusiasts or another. This is what I'll try to discuss here, with key links included to other pertinent areas of my website including along the way.

Older cars can be grouped more or less by the year they were made, such as with vintage and veteran cars for instance, vintage cars (as defined by the Vintage Sports Car Club I think) are anything built pre-1930. A car built between 1930 and WW2 is generally classed as being a Post Vintage Thoroughbred, quite a grand moniker for many cars that fall into this group, which at the time were less than grand. After this time things get significantly less clear, with the term 'Classic Car' being applied by various quarters to any car from the 1940s right through in some cases to the 1980s even.

Confusing things even more, for the UK enthusiast of classic cars, is the zero rated road tax, and the new DVLA classification of historic car (formerly PLG, which remains for later cars). The zero rate road tax was introduced by the Conservative Government back in the early 1990s, the idea being that the cutoff would be on a rolling 25 year basis. However when Tony's cronies got in a few years back, they froze this rolling arrangement, and ever since the zero rated roadtax applies to any car *built* prior to 1/1/1973, so even if your BMW 2002 was registered in '73, if the build date on the V5 is a '72 date, you should be ok. In my mind therefore any car that qualifies for the free road tax is by and large a 'Classic' merely by its age, though there is no doubt that later examples of certain cars are correctly also classed as Classic Cars by the initiated fan.

A visit to your local classic & vintage car show will do little to clear up the situation. Amongst the many displays of accepted classics, such as MGBs, Rileys, old Jags, Triumphs and so on, there will be displays by enthusiasts of much later cars such as the Toyota MR2, Opel Manta, Ford Granada and other fairly recent cars. These later cars now have their own following of enthusiasts, which is great, although I must admit to balking at paying to enter a car show and being presented with (admittedly very shiny) examples of cars that you often still see propped up in 2nd rate car dealer forecourts and Tesco car parks. A local show costs around £3 to enter the grounds of the country estate that it is hosted at, then a further £5 - £6 per person to get into the show area itself, so thats £8+ before I get into the show.

But back to the main point. An alternative idea may be to pop down the local newsagent and buy a copy of a magazine devoted to classic cars. A quick flick through certain magazines will do little to help - alongside (say) a serialised restoration of an Austin A40 you stand a very good chance of seeing a buyers guide for a Peugeot 205GTi. Even insurance companies who specialise in older car's are now taking on board the fact that as many not-that-old cars now attract a strong following (witness the Pug GTi and MR2s again), branding cars over 10 years old as 'modern classics', which may be a satisfactory way of classifying things, with pre-1980 cars usually approaching the full 'classic' status. But, as I say, any true definition of what is a classic car cannot really be given, and much depends on who you speak to .. ask an owner of an Opel Senator whether his sparkling 3.0E is a classic and he/she will be in no doubt, however address the same question re the Opel to an owner of an established classic such as a P4 Rover and the reply may be somewhat different.

At the end of the day, the term 'classic car' is now accepted as applying to any car over say 15 years of age that has some fan base to draw upon, with one or two exceptions for truly interesting more recent automobiles.

I have made no mention of so-called 'Modern Classics' simply because these are cars that motoring pundits predict will attract the true full-on fanatical following of older car fans in the not-too-distant future.

An Introduction to Baby Car Seats

Becoming a parent for the first time involves a huge amount of learning, as there are hundreds of things involved which childless people will have had no reason to come across before, nor had any incentive to learn about. When you first learn of the impending new arrival, your thoughts will probably be taken up with decorating and equipping a nursery, buying clothes, bottles, and much more, but many people don't think of a baby car seat until later on in the pregnancy. It's very important to make sure you know what to look for in a seat, as after all, you'll need one on your baby's very first journey, from the hospital back to home.

For this first journey, you'll need a seat which faces towards the rear of your vehicle. This provides the best protection in the event of an impact for an infant who is unable yet to support the weight of their own head. The seat will be nicely reclined backwards, providing a safe and comfortable coccoon for your baby.

It's important to choose a rear-facing seat which is sturdy and dependable, yet light to carry. Young babies sleep a little and often, and the last thing you want to do after finally getting your child to sleep in a car journey is to wake them by removing them from their warm and cosy seat. Having an easily detachable model which is light to carry means you can ferry your baby from car to house with as little disturbance as possible.

These rear facing seats are only suitable for younger infants. Once they've grown to weigh around 20 pounds, or the top of their head is nearing the upper edge of the seat and thus no longer protected properly, you'll need to move to a forward facing seat.

These seats are much more upright, but better models can be adjusted to provide a more horizontal position to help your toddler sleep during longer journeys. Because of the upright position, it's essential that your child is able to sit up on their own before using this kind of seat. Forward facing seats are built to last for a fair few years, and most will be good until your child reaches the age of 4 or 6.

Before we finish, there are two extremely important things to bear in mind when buying a car seat.

Firstly, you should be very careful when buying one that isn't brand new. Although it might seem like an economy to get a second hand seat, there's no way of knowing for sure its history. It may have been involved in an accident at some point in the past, resulting in weaknessess that may not be visible to the naked eye. These weaknesses could endanger your baby even in a minor accident. You should only buy a used seat when you can be absolutely sure of the history - such as when buying off close friends or family.

Finally, baby car seats shouldn't be fitted in front seats where an airbag is fitted. In an accident, the inflation of the airbag could cause serious injury or suffocation to a child, so always fit car seats in the rear of the vehicle in this case.
